Football union welcomes Ekandjo's sacking

THE Namibia Football Players Union (Nafpu) has welcomed President Hage Geingob's decision to relieve Jerry Ekandjo of his duties as minister of sport, youth and national service on Thursday.

At a press conference Nafpu president Sylvester 'Lolo' Goraseb said the decision to let go of Ekandjo will improve the management of sports in Namibia.

“We congratulate the President for prioritising change and transformation. By letting go of Ekandjo, Geingob has responded to our cry for change and transformation. We look forward to a young, vibrant leadership at the ministry to lead sports transformation,” Goraseb said.

Nafpu secretary general Olsen Kahiriri agreed with his president, saying that the outgoing minister was a stumbling block who hindered the progress of sports in the country.

“If we start cleaning from top, I think we will achieve our goals of making sure that sports is run properly. A healthy nation will only come about if leaders take good decision when it comes to sports administration. We have trust on the fact that the President will make a wise appointment,” Kahiriri added.

He also said that if Namibia invests in sports, a lot of lives will be changed, and this will mean the economy of the country will also improve through the export of talent.

Ekandjo was relieved of his duties as sport minister on Thursday, together with home affairs minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana, three years after being appointed into the position.
