EUGENE Jantjies has been appointed as captain of the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias for their upcoming campaigns in the SuperSport Challenge and Currie Cup competitions.
The Gobabis-born player has developed under the guidance of national coach Phil Davies, to become the national team's first-choice scrum half and has been given authority to lead the squad with a fresh approach.
To strengthen Welwitschias coach Lyn Jones' new coaching team, JP Nel has been entrusted with the duty of developing back line players. He offers a lot of experience and expertise, as a former Super Rugby player, with more than a decade of experience playing at the elite level for the Blue Bulls. Nel, who currently coaches FNB Wanderers, starts his role with immediate effect.
Returning this year to Namibia to play his club rugby, Jantjies said: “I am very proud to be given the opportunity to captain the Welwitschias this season. We have a good blend of local players in this year's squad - I hope to bring out the best in them, as I always give 100 percent when putting on the jersey.”
Namibia's Director of Rugby, Phil Davies was delighted with the appointment, saying: “Eugene has been an integral member of the national team for the past few years. He is an excellent professional who commands the respect of his peers. This appointment clearly demonstrates his continued development as a player and leader.”
