Ministry phases out cheques for markers’ S&T

The subsistence and travel allowances of teachers who grade answer sheets for the national examinations will no longer be given to them in cheque form.
The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture in a statement sent to all regional directors on Thursday said the allowance will instead be paid directly into their bank accounts as the Ministry of Finance has announced that it will no longer print cheques.
The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Sanet Steenkamp in the statement said: “This is done in order avoid paying markers who do not turn up for marking”.
The Ministry of Education has therefore asked that the regional directorates inform teachers who are appointed as markers to make prior arrangements regarding the payment of their meals and accommodation while they wait for their allowances to be paid into their bank accounts.
