Namibia and Botswana sign boundary treaty

President Hage Geingob and Botswanas President, Lieutenant-General Seretse Khama Ian Khama signed a boundary treaty on behalf of their countries at State House on Monday.
The treaty creates a boundary management structure between the two countries and will regulate the free movement of people between Namibia and Botswana.
Geingob said the boundary should not be a hindrance and should, instead, facilitate movement.
Having our people on both sides, this treaty is an absolute necessity which is why we are signing it in public, he said.
The Head of State also said with the signing of the treaty, people of both countries would be freer to move around their goods as well, adding that there is talk of abolishing visas soon.
Khama meanwhile said it is gratifying that the two Heads of State have signed the boundary treaty between the two countries as it reaffirms their common boundary.
It once again reaffirms another important milestone in our joint efforts to further strengthen the longstanding excellent relations between our two countries, he stated.
The treaty between the two sister countries was supported by the African Union Commission and other development partners.
Khama said as democratic states that abide by the rule of law, Mondays signing ceremony demonstrates unwavering commitment to the principal of good.
It goes without saying that peaceful resistance of friendly nations provides a conducive environment for deepening bilateral cooperation and understanding, he said.
After signing the treaty, the two Statesmen paid a courtesy visit to the Southern African Customs Union headquarters, which was followed by a banquet at State House.
