The Namibia Training Authority (NTA) has been conducting a series of trainings in entrepreneurial skills development for graduates as well as trainees from the five selected VTCs, namely Valombola VTC, Eenhana VTC, Okakarara VTC, Rundu VTC and Zambezi VTC as a pilot project.
According to Mr. Indongo Indongo, Manager: Research and Planning at NTA, the purpose of the project is to identify, select and empower VET trainees/graduates in specific occupations with business and entrepreneurial skills, facilitate a process whereby they are enabled to start up their own sustainable enterprises (this would include the provision of strategic equipment support) and; provide coaching and mentoring support to the beneficiaries.
In total 128 graduates/trainees are going through these series of training and high level topics covers are Business Planning & Idea generation, Business Management and Bookkeeping, Financial Statement and VAT & Income Tax and Marketing. Coaching and mentorship takes one-on-one sessions of which issues facing the graduates are unpacked and addressed at an individual basis.
Mr Indongo concluded that VTC graduates are trained not to go look for employment but to become entrepreneurs and create jobs, however, the challenges are a lot facing these young people. Just to mentioned fews, lack of access to starting up finance, lack of access to information, equipment to expensive, lack of incubators in the regions, lack of available opportunities for job attachment.
