Residents of the Otjozondjupa and Erongo regions gathered at Otjiwarongo on Wednesday to discuss the Blueprint on Wealth Redistribution and Poverty Eradication.
The blueprint was formulated by the Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare to provide guidance on the actual implementation of Government’s initiatives and programmes on poverty eradication.
The ministry is conducting regional meetings to popularise the document and its activities amongst community members and officials.
Local authority councillor for the Swakopmund Municipality, Kleopas Ngwena said it will be difficult to eradicate poverty if land ownership still remains unequal.
“How do you plan to eradicate poverty if land is limited and our natural resources remain in the hands of the private individuals?” Ngwena wanted to know.
Okahandja Chief Executive Officer, Martha Mutilifa urged the ministry to concentrate its limited resources like social grants in assisting the identified definite needy and vulnerable groups of people.
She said the ministry should lay down working activities and programmes that will coach each farmer to dedicate portions of land for the production of food.
Swakopmund Deputy Mayor, Maria Elago spoke about how big a problem excessive alcohol consumption is in Namibia, saying lawmakers remain lenient in tackling problems related to alcohol abuse.
“Alcohol abuse is destroying our nation. It contributes to poverty among our people, unemployment and diseases,” she said.
Chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council, Julius Neumbo said the ministry should include well planned strategies to help people who scavenge for food at dumpsites.
“There are children amongst these people. We need to do something real for them,” Neumbo said.
Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, Zephania Kameeta officially opened the meeting, saying the main objectives of the blueprint is to fight poverty and inequality so all Namibians can access basic necessities.
A similar meeting was held in the Oshana Region last Friday, and Khomas is next on Monday.
